| 4 juin | Eva Kanso - USC Embodied Intelligence in Sea Star Locomotion Sea stars crawl across complex terrains using hundreds of tube feet, achieving coordinated locomotion without the guidance of a centralized brain. At the core of these behaviors lie sensorimotor loops that map perception to action at the level of individual tube feet, which, through interactions, give rise to emergent functional behavior. How does robust collective intelligence emerge from decentralized interactions among tube feet with limited sensing and response capabilities ? Combining experiments and physics-based modeling, we investigate the hierarchical and distributed neuromechanical organization underlying locomotion and cooperative transport in sea stars, and contrast this control paradigm with the decentralized intelligence observed in schooling fish. These results point to general design principles for adaptive, resilient soft robotic systems capable of collective intelligence without centralized control. |
