Séminaire PMMH — Lorène Champougny, LGC Toulouse

Vendredi 9 octobre de 11h00 à 12h00 - Salle réunion PMMH 1

The Fluid Mechanics of Splatter Painting

In art, splatter painting consists in subjecting a paint-loaded brush to an acceleration (for example by “flicking” the brush or tapping its handle) to detach paint droplets or filaments. Those are projected onto the substrate to be painted, leaving filamentary or spotty patterns (Fig. 1a). In this technique, perhaps most emblematically used by American painters Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) and Sam Francis (1923-1994), the brush never touches the canvas, and tuning the final pattern becomes a challenge for the artist.
In this seminar, I will present our recent efforts to unravel the physical phenomena at play in splatter painting. We perform series of experiments on real and simplified brushes (Fig. 1b), subjected to a controlled impact on their handle. The amount of expelled liquid and the resulting patterns are characterized as a function of the liquid viscosity and brush acceleration. In combination with a model of the unsteady flow in the anisotropic, porous tip of the brush, these experiments allow us to identify different splatting regimes and help us understand how splatter painting artists adjust their working conditions.

(b) Liquid ejection caused by an impact on brush handle for a round commercial brush loaded with a 20% glycerol/water mixture (top), and for a “simplified brush”, made of a flexible capillary tube of internal diameter 0.2 mm, filled with water (bottom).

Spatiotemporal Characterization of Active Dynamics in Channels : Theory and Experiments
Swimming microorganisms often live in confined, complex environments, where they transition between bulk and near-surface dynamics. Their dynamics can be quantified in terms of first-passage statistics. In this talk, I will first consider active Brownian dynamics between two walls. Using a systematic expansion, (…)

From disordered Generalized Lotka-Volterra models to gut microbiome complexity
Inferring species interactions in highly heterogeneous ecological communities and developing a robust, predictive theory of ecological stability remain major challenges, due both to the amount of data required and the complexity of the underlying interaction network. In this talk, I will present a high-dimensional (…)
