Séminaire PMMH - Ada Altieri (MSC, Paris)
From disordered Generalized Lotka-Volterra models to gut microbiome complexity
Inferring species interactions in highly heterogeneous ecological communities and developing a robust, predictive theory of ecological stability remain major challenges, due both to the amount of data required and the complexity of the underlying interaction network.
In this talk, I will present a high-dimensional version of the Lotka–Volterra model incorporating demographic fluctuations and heterogeneous interactions among species.
I will then explore its relevance to the human gut microbiome. Through dataset analysis from both healthy individuals and patients with inflammatory bowel disease, I will show that distinct physiological states of the gut microbiome map onto different noise-driven and disorder-driven regimes of the Generalized Lotka-Volterra model.
Finally, I will discuss extensions beyond the standard logistic-growth and purely competitive frameworks that can promote coexistence, thereby offering a new perspective on the long-standing diversity–stability debate.

Spatiotemporal Characterization of Active Dynamics in Channels : Theory and Experiments
Swimming microorganisms often live in confined, complex environments, where they transition between bulk and near-surface dynamics. Their dynamics can be quantified in terms of first-passage statistics. In this talk, I will first consider active Brownian dynamics between two walls. Using a systematic expansion, (…) -

The Fluid Mechanics of Splatter Painting
In art, splatter painting consists in subjecting a paint-loaded brush to an acceleration (for example by “flicking” the brush or tapping its handle) to detach paint droplets or filaments. Those are projected onto the substrate to be painted, leaving filamentary or spotty patterns (Fig. 1a). In this technique, (…)
The audience is composed of people with rather heterogeneous backgrounds including specialists in solids, fluids, granular flows, statistical physics... so the idea is to keep your talk understandable by people not necessarily working in your field... The seminar time slot runs from 11am to noon so the best is to make the talk last around 45 minutes to leave some time for discussion.
