Droplet in Hostile Territory

A volatile liquid placed near a heat source generates vapor. This vapor forms a thin film that dramatically reduces heat transfer between the surface and the droplet. As a result, the droplet does not boil. This phenomenon, known as the Leidenfrost effect, can be observed when a water droplet is deposited on a hot pan.

We will explore several unusual manifestations of the Leidenfrost effect.
(i) Instead of a solid plate, the hot substrate is replaced by a granular material. Under specific conditions, the droplet begins to dig into the granular bed.
(ii) Returning to a solid surface, we investigate flammable droplets in the Leidenfrost state. The influence of the flame on the droplet's lifetime is measured and rationalized.

Finally, as an appetizer, we describe the interaction between a droplet and cotton candy, focusing in particular on its interaction with sugar fibers.

The audience is composed of people with rather heterogeneous backgrounds including specialists in solids, fluids, granular flows, statistical physics... so the idea is to keep your talk understandable by people not necessarily working in your field... The seminar time slot runs from 11am to noon so the best is to make the talk last around 45 minutes to leave some time for discussion.
