Computing with Frustrated Space-Time Metamaterials
Space-time metamaterials are engineered media whose constitutive parameters are modulated simultaneously in both space and time. They are now used to achieve unprecedented wave control. However, the vast majority of studies operate in the stable regime, where modulation parameters are chosen to ensure linear wave propagation. If the modulation is too strong, energy injection can drive the metamaterial into an unstable state, leading to a regime of parametric instability. With an appropriate choice of modulation, we have shown experimentally and theoretically that novel “dynamically frustrated” oscillating states can emerge. These consist of nonlinear, topologically protected phase dislocations that exhibit unidirectional propagation across the entire chain. These dislocations can be fully controlled—they can be made to stop, split, and recombine. We leverage this behavior to create “mechanical computers” : branched networks of metamaterials designed for cascading logic. In 2D metamaterials, I will show that dynamical frustration leads to synchronization between adjacent cells, causing the entire network to oscillate in phase.

Vendredi 20 novembre de 11h00 à 12h00 - Salle réunion PMMH 1
From disordered Generalized Lotka-Volterra models to gut microbiome complexity
Inferring species interactions in highly heterogeneous ecological communities and developing a robust, predictive theory of ecological stability remain major challenges, due both to the amount of data required and the complexity of the underlying interaction network. In this talk, I will present a high-dimensional (…)
The audience is composed of people with rather heterogeneous backgrounds including specialists in solids, fluids, granular flows, statistical physics... so the idea is to keep your talk understandable by people not necessarily working in your field... The seminar time slot runs from 11am to noon so the best is to make the talk last around 45 minutes to leave some time for discussion.
